ॐ ब्रह्म॑जज्ञा॒नं प्र॑थ॒मं पु॒रस्ता॒द्विसी॑म॒तस्सु॒रुचो॑ वे॒न आ॑वः ।
सबु॒ध्निया॑ उप॒मा अ॑स्य वि॒ष्ठास्स॒तश्च॒ योनि॒मस॑तश्च॒ विवः॑ ॥

English Translation:

"Om. The foremost knowledge of Brahman that existed from the earliest times, the excellent glories that emanated from the effulgent Vena (the sun), established firmly. Whatever origin there is of the existent and of the non-existent is all that."

The Divine Messengers

नाके॑ सुप॒र्णमु॑प॒ यत्पत॑न्तं हृ॒दा वेन॑न्तो अ॒भ्य च॑क्षत त्वा ।
हिर॑ण्यपक्षं॒ वरु॑णस्य दू॒तं य॒मस्य॒ योनौ॑ शकु॒नं भु॑र॒ण्युम् ॥

English Translation:

"To you who fly upwards to the heaven, the wise men see in their hearts as you soar. The golden-winged messenger of Varuna, the swift-flying bird that is born in the womb of Yama."

The Worship of Soma

आप्या॑यस्व॒ समे॑तु ते वि॒श्वतः॑ सोम॒ वृष्णि॑यम् ।
भवा॒ वाज॑स्य सङ्ग॒थे ॥

English Translation:

"O Soma, be filled and come together from all sides for your exhilaration. Be for the union of food (energy) and its accomplishment."

Homage to the Universal Rudra

यो रु॒द्रो अ॒ग्नौ यो अ॒प्सु य ओष॑धीषु॒ यो रु॒द्रो विश्वा॒ भुव॑ना वि॒वेश॒ तस्मै॑ रु॒द्राय॒ नमो॑ अस्तु ॥

English Translation:

"That Rudra who is in fire, who is in waters, who is in herbs and plants, that Rudra who has entered into all created beings - may salutations be to that Rudra."

इ॒दं विष्णु॒र्विच॑क्रमे त्रे॒धा निद॑धे प॒दम् ।
समू॑ढमस्य पाग्ं सु॒रे ॥

Praise of Lord Indra

इन्द्रं॒ विश्वा॑ अवीवृधन्त्समु॒द्रव्य॑चस॒ङ्गिरो॑ र॒थीत॑मग्ं रथी॒नां वाजा॑ना॒ग्ं॒ सत्प॑तिं॒ पति᳚म् ॥

"All beings sustain Indra, the songs (praises) extend over the vast (expanse), he is the most chariot-borne among the chariot warriors, the lord of food, the true lord, the protector."

आपो॒ वा इ॒दग्ं सर्वं॒ विश्वा॑ भू॒तान्यापः॑ प्रा॒णा वा आपः॑ प॒शव॒ आपोऽन्न॒मापोऽमृ॑त॒माप॑स्सं॒राडापो॑ वि॒राडाप॑स्स्व॒राडाप॒श्छन्दा॒ग्॒स्यापो॒ ज्योती॒ग्॒ष्यापो॒ यजू॒ग्॒ष्याप॑स्स॒त्यमाप॒स्सर्वा॑ दे॒वता॒ आपो॒ भूर्भुव॒स्सुव॒राप॒ ओम् ॥

English Translation:

"Waters are indeed everything; all created beings are waters. Waters are the life-breath. Animals are waters. Food is waters. Immortality is waters. Samrad (large) are waters. Virat (expansive) are waters. Svarat (shining) are waters. The meter (chandas) is waters. The lights (jyotish) are waters. The yajus are waters. Truth is waters. All deities are waters. Bhuh, Bhuvah, Suvah are waters. Om."

The Purification with Waters

अ॒पः प्रण॑यति ।
श्र॒द्धा वा आपः॑ । श्र॒द्धामे॒वारभ्य॑ प्र॒णीय॒ प्रच॑रति ।
य॒ज्ञो वा आपः॑ । य॒ज्ञमे॒वारभ्य॑ प्र॒णीय॒ प्रच॑रति ।
अ॒पः प्रण॑यति । वज्रो॒ वा आपः॑ । वज्र॑मे॒व भ्रातृ॑व्येभ्यः प्र॒हृत्य॑ प्र॒णीय॒ प्रच॑रति ।
अ॒पः प्रण॑यति । आपो॒ वै र॑क्षो॒घ्नीः । रक्ष॑सा॒मप॑हत्यै ।

"He leads the waters (for purification). Waters are faith. Taking the waters which represent faith, he proceeds with the ceremony.
Waters are the sacrifice. Taking the waters which represent the sacrifice, he proceeds with the ceremony.
He leads the waters. Waters are the thunderbolt (vajra). Taking the waters as a thunderbolt, he strikes his enemies and proceeds.
He leads the waters. Waters destroy demons. For the destruction of demons.
He leads the waters. Waters are the dear abode of the gods. Taking the waters as the dear abode of the gods, he proceeds.
He leads the waters. Waters are all deities. Taking the waters representing all deities, he proceeds.
He leads the waters. Waters are peaceful. With these peaceful waters, he pacifies his impurities."

Purification by Savitri

दे॒वो वः॑ सवि॒तोत्पु॑ना॒त्वच्छि॑द्रेण प॒वित्रे॑ण॒ वसो॒स्सूर्य॑स्य र॒श्मिभिः॑ ॥

Ceremonial Utterances (1-3)

कूर्चाग्रैः राक्षसान् घोरान् छिन्धि कर्मविधातिनः ।
त्वामर्पयामि कुम्भेऽस्मिन् साफल्यं कुरु कर्मणि ॥ १ ॥

वृक्षराज समुद्भूताः शाखायाः पल्लवत्वचः ।
युष्मान् कुम्भेष्वर्पयामि सर्वपापापनुत्तये ॥ २ ॥

नालिकेर समुद्भूत त्रिनेत्र हरसत्तम ।
शिखया दुरितं सर्वं पापं पीडां च मे नुद ॥ ३ ॥

English Translation:

(1) "O dreadful demons who create obstacles in actions, be cut off by the tips of kusha grass!
I place you in this pot; make my actions successful.

(2) "You who have sprung from the king of trees (coconut), from branches, leaves, and bark,
I place you in these pots for the removal of all sins.

(3) "O Lord Shiva, who has arisen from the coconut, the supreme one with three eyes,
Remove all my sins, afflictions, and troubles with your crest."

Prayer to Savitri

स हि रत्ना॑नि दा॒शुषे᳚ सु॒वाति॑ स॒वि॒ता भगः॑ ।
तं भा॒गं चि॒त्रमी॑महे ॥

English Translation:

"For Savitri bestows treasures on the worshipper, the bountiful one. We meditate upon that resplendent portion (of divine grace)."
